Small Arms, brings new spice and life to the XBLM

Its been a while since a fairly fresh game has hit the marketplace, due to Microsoft laying a huge amount of emphasis on old school games.

Right when you jump into the game, you will immediately notice that the influences from Super Smash Brothers are there, and quite obvious, although not directly extracted. Small Arms blends both Super Smash Bros. and Metal Slug into a interesting game, that in the end impresses at the very least.

I am not going to go into a lot of detail, but for 800pts, this game is defiantly worth it. Its the only other XBL Arcade game I have purchased that I felt was a great purchase, and fully worth the cash. If you don't want to take my word for it, simply download the trial, and check it out for yourself. You will like what you see.

Preordered Halo 3 and Lost Planet

Today I preordered both Halo 3 and Lost Planet [Limited Edition]. They never even bothered asking me which of the Halo 3 skews I wanted, due to the lack of knowledge at this moment on the game. All they could tell me was that it was hitting stores sometime next November. I also preordered Lost Planet limited, and that is scheduled to be released January 13th. So many games, so little time.

Beat GoW Campaign in insane

Today, I beat the Gears of War campaign on insane, with my brother, and it was a awesome experience. Insane, is not to insane; its a perfect balance of hardness. You occasionally get stuck in places, but that is expected when running through a game on the hardest difficulty. I can confidentially say that Gears is definitely one of the best games to come around in a rather long time, at least for me. The campaign actually enticed me to play through it twice, and I plan on running through it again on insane, with Matt. Its like a drug.

Go Gears of War.

New Gears of War Trailer

Microsoft recently popped a new Gears of War trailer up on the Xbox Live Marketplace for download. Xboxyde, as always, captured it and it can be downloaded also from the site (Only in SD).

This trailer was extremely well done in my opinion, and the music choice was spot on. This was worth the time, and I guarantee you that you will enjoy it.

Splinter Cell Multiplayer Overview

For the most part, my whole weekend was spent playing Splinter Cell. For the majority of the time I played the multi-player portion of the game, but also touched lightly on the cooperative challenges, and the single player. All three portions of the game, I heavily enjoyed.

The multi-player portion of all the Splinter Cell games has always been my favorite part about these games. Although, I felt that Chaos Theory did fall behind in that department when comparing it to Pandora Tomorrow it still retained its unique style. Double Agent is excellent, and Ubisoft did a fantastic job in making sure that this game was balanced, and that the game play would not get to stale.

All the multi-player maps are excellent in architecture, and quite complex. This was a big improvement from Chaos Theory in my opinion, due to the lack of good maps that were found in the game. The changes made to both the spy and the mercenary are extremely fitting, in most cases. The spy is now forced to play much more stealthy, as opposed to acting like a ninja, or something of that nature. You now have no weapon, and can only carry one piece of equipment at a time:

  • Smoke Grenades: Slows down mercenary movement, and can help to confuse the enemy. Slowing down mercenary movement, can in turn help to allow the spy to crack the targets neck. This locomotive slowdown, could also allow for a quick getaway.

  • Flash bang Grenades: Blinds the enemy in a very effective manner, usually allowing for a quick neck break. The flash bangs in Double Agent are much more effective then the ones found in the predecessors.

  • Syringe: The syringe is essentially a means of healing in the game. The previous games in the series allowed to heal at a med kit, but that is no more found in Double Agent. Also, in Chaos Theory you could regenerate health, if you stood still, this is also not found in Double Agent. The only means of healing, is through the syringe. You can use the syringes on yourself, or on a teammate. This is extremely useful, when you cannot make it back to the spawn to get some syringes.

  • Jammers: In Double Agent, mercenary's discover the spy through a sensor found on the bottom of the H.U.D (Heads up display). Depending on the proximity to the spy, the sensor on screen will pulse more frequently, and the force feedback will rumble more violently. The jammer tricks the mercenary's sensor into thinking that there is a spy near, when planted. This is useful, for setting up an attacking on a terminal.

The listed equipment above is given to the spy in a supply of three. You only get three of each; however, you can go back to the spawn and pick up more.

Not that the spy has a new a hacking device, you are not need to be tethered to a laptop, like in previous games. You can now hack a terminal, at a longer distance, but this distance comes with a price. The closer to the terminal you are the quicker you can hack it, thus providing you with the files quicker. You can also get files from all four terminals, as opposed to simply one. This helps in giving you much more choice. This hacking device, is taken out by holding the R-Trigger, and can be used for more than just hacking files from a terminal. You can also use the hacking device, to disable lights, or even neutralize a mercenary.

The spy also has a variety of new acrobatic moves. From leaping through a window, to flipping up into the ceiling. This spy is the ultimate weapon when it comes to athletics and other acrobatic skills. These moves can usually be initiated by using the R-Bumper, when near one of the targeted action areas. There is some timing involved, so this will take some practice.

The mercenary, is now a much different entity. Here is a list of all the differences that I can remember:

  • Drastically increased look speed and walk speed
  • Bull rushing can now be used to sprint (Approx. 5 Seconds)
  • Three grenades, and two drones at disposal. Drones can be used to get into tight quarters, and other places the mercenary cannot get to. Drone has 3 second fuse, and blows up upon countdown. Grenades and drones can be refilled at spawn.
  • Armed with one fully automatic rifle, with scope. Similar to rifle in Pandora Tomorrow.
  • Flashlight and EMP (Electromagentic Pulse). Flashlight, is used to light areas. Radius of the flashlight can be adjusted using the D-Pad. EMP can be used to find spies when they are hacking, or doing other similar actions. Merc needs to be standing still for this to work.
  • Mercenary has a sensor that can be found on the bottom of the H.U.D. Sensor will start to pulsate once near a spy. Pulse will strengthen when spy is closer.
  • Beserk still present. Click the L-Analog to perform
  • Now can hook onto rails, to get to lower area. Perform, by pressing A button when next to a rail.
That for the moment is all I can remember off the top of my head. Hopefully that will give an idea as to how much change is present in this game, from previous games in the series. I will eventually do a write up on the cooperative challenges, and the single player once I play through all the content. I know this write up was a bit sloopy, but hopefully it was informative.

Grid Wars 2 - Free Geometry Wars for the PC, and MAC

If you have ever wanted to play Geometry Wars on your PC, due to a lack of a Xbox 360, its your lucky day. Grid Wars, was asked to be shut down, by Bizarre Creations, due to the increasing popularity of the project, and Bizarre along with Microsoft were "beginning to feel the effects of the Geometry Wars clones on our sales via Microsoft". I guess Mark Incitti, author of the freeware project, went back at it. According to the site in which the project is available for download, it claims Grid Wars 2 was indeed made by Mark Incitti.

Grid Wars 2 is currently available for download and can be downloaded [here]. Currently the game is supported on both PC and MAC systems.

Arg, Another day wait for SCDA

I have been anticipating the release of Double Agent for some time, and for whatever reason Canadians get it a day later, or possibly two. I just recently called EB, and apparently it should be in tomorrow or the next day; however, I am praying that it hits the shelves here tomorrow. Another day passes, and my hunger for SCDA grows. That demo also did not do me enough justice, 4 games is simply not enough.

Serious issues with SCDA demo

When I downloaded the demo for the upcoming Splinter Cell game, I was hyped to the max. I really want to get my hands on the multiplayer, seeing as I loved the first of the series, Pandora Tomorrow and Chaos Theory. The sad thing is, since the demo has hit the marketplace, I have only played 1 spy game, and 3 merc games. There are several problems with the demo, that make it extremly hard to get into games, and actually have a game.

Usually, when you go into "Quick Match" or "Custom Match" it will usually leave you hanging on "Joining session" . The only way to escape this infinite hanging, is to ether boot back into the Xbox dashboard, or to logout of XBL, and sign back in. Signing out would be the best thing to do, and thanks to Matt, I realized this was a possiblity. I never thought on it for whatever reason. Another annoying part of the functonaility is the fact that, if you do manage to join a game, you sometimes get the "Host has ended session" message. The host actually does not end the session. You get this message, usually, because there are people who got in ahead of you in the game. Last but not least, you got the Spy whores; who if you are on the Spy side will kick you out of the game. This tends to get extremly frustrating, seeing as it is so hard to get a game in the first place.

I can say that the games I did play were excellent, and that this demo did indeed hype me up much more for the release of DA. The source of the hype, is more through the inability to join actually games. This makes me look forward to the release of DA, so I can actually get in some games with Matt and my other friends, without have to go through hell first.

Double Agent is slated to release October 17th.

Its decided, I'm buying PSU

After playing around 5 hours on the beta, I realized that I thoroughly enjoy the game. This enjoyment is probably half derived from my love for the GCN version that I played a huge amount back when it came out. The community interaction is much improved in Phantasy Star Universe, and it is much easier to communicate with others. There has been a insane amount of content added compared to what was avaiable to the player in Phantasy Star Online Episode 1 and 2.

  • More customization with characters (eye colour, voice of your character, shoes, etc..)
  • Synthesize your own item
  • Customize your own room
  • Use vehicles to get to desired destination faster (Variety of vehicles; Floader, Striker, Lunga, G-Flyer, PPT)
  • Choose from over 20 categories and 200 varieties of weapons and powerful photon arts to put together a varied arsenal for combat

There is so much new stuff added to this game, it makes it hard for me to believe this is still a Phantasy Star game that I am playing. In a good way of course. If you haven't given this game a try yet, I strongly urge you to do so. There are only 3 2 days left, seeing that there is a 24 hour maintenance period for XBL coming up.

Phantasy Star Universe is slated to release on October 24th. Remember, be sure to check this out before the beta expires on October 18th.

For more information visit the Phantasy Star Universe Homepage.

PSU, When will I get to play?

Well, considering SEGA only setup so much server space, it is becoming increasingly difficult impossible to get into the server to play. I am sick of recieving "Connection to Phantasy Star Universe server has failed" so I simply stopped trying.

Yesterday, I played for a good 2 hours, and the game seems to play alright, despite the lag. I don't mind the frequent lagging of nearby characters, but when the complete server chokes for 10 seconds, that is simply not cool. The game plays similar to its predecessor, but some new mechanics have been added. Dual wielding is one of the first new incorporations that I noticed, and was quite pleased with. Overall my expierence so far has not been entirely negative, although I am getting fairly pissed off with the frequent server failure.

PS: Right now I am trying to connect to the servers.

Two Splinter Cell DA multiplayer vids

I came accross two of these videos on YouTube, and from my understanding there new, at least I haven't seen them. Both videos showcase the spy. Enjoy.

Finally, I did the impossible!

After months of toiling with Street Fighter II' Hyper Fighting, and attempting to beat the single player, I finally achieved the impossible. Yesterday, I finally beat the damn single player, which took me at least an hour. The game gets me so frustrated, I cannot refrain from cursing my head of in the fit of rage, but I got through it. I don't even think I am going to attempt to get the other achievements, for obvious reasons.

Would I suggest this game to anyone looking for a good fighting game? Probably not, unless you are a die hard Street Fighter fan, which I am far from. I do enjoy a good game once and a while, but the game is really, really hard, to the extent of it pissing me off. The multiplayer, although, I don't touch it anymore, supplied a good few hours of fun. The online multiplayer is the best thing about this game, in my opinion, and it would be the only reason I would get it again if I had the chance.

Phantasy Star Universe Beta Tomorrow

There is a free beta for the upcoming MMO Phantasy Star Universe, which you can snatch off the Xbox Live Marketplace tomorrow, October 11th through October 12th. You need a XBL Gold account to participate, and the beta will be ongoing for a whole week.

Below are a list of suggestions from Sega to get started on your conquest:

  • Create Your Character - Construct the perfect avatar with the robust Character Creation tool that enables players to change their character’s body shape and dimensions, hairstyle and color, facial structure and features, and more!
  • Meet New People - Head out to the lobby and meet new people! Visit various shops for weapons, clothing and other items and then join or create a squad to embark on missions with new friends.
  • Explore the Universe - With three expansive planets to explore, discover the adventures that lie ahead on Parum, Neudaiz, and Moatoob.
  • My Room - Create your personal online space by adding items and elements from your adventures, and decorating your My Room with various themes and wallpaper. In here, your Partner Machinery is able to create new weapons and items for you to use in battle, trade with friends, or sell for a profit. Players can also exchange Partner Cards and visit friends in their My Room!
  • Customize Your Look - Head to one of the various Clothing or Parts shops located across the Universe and outfit your character with the newest styles.
Try Different Job Types - Speak to the Guardian Representative located on the fifth floor of the Guardian’s Colony to freely change between the three class types: Hunter, Ranger, and Force.
  • Create and Sell Items - Craft items from the base materials you find during your adventures using your Partner Machinery. You can even sell these items within player-run Shops!

This is quite exciting news, and good news at that. I loved Phantasy Star Online Episode 1 and 2, and PSU seems to be considerably better than its predecessor. This game actually seems to be new content, instead of the previous release of PSO Episode 1 and 2, which was basically a rehash of the DC version, with a new campaign added.
