Optimized settings when playing WoW
Over the course of the day, I have really improved my FPS (Frames Per Second) in WoW. Instead of running choppy and slow, it runs smooth and fast after I have fooled around with a couple of settings both in the graphics card and in the WoW client. Some of the choppy gameplay can be contributed to lack of ram (512MB is a little low, although this is what I play with). I plan to upgrade to 1GB of ram, and a new graphics card over the summer, but for now this setup works fine. Here is the PC I use to play WoW:
Windows XP (Service Pack 2)
Intel Celeron D 2.93GHz
512MB RAM
Sapphire Radeon 9200SE PCI Card
On average I get about 30FPS, most of the time, and most of the choppy gameplay in Ironforge and Ogrimmar is gone. Now first off, you want to configure your graphics card. I use a ATI graphics, therefore this guide strictly outlines the settings within the Catalyst drivers; however, Nvidia cards should be similar in configuration.
First off, go to the desktop, right click, and click on properties. Once there, click on the settings tab up around the top of the window, then click on the advanced button on the bottom of the window. On the top of the window that opened, following the click you should see several tabs at the top of the window. Click on the 3D tab. Once here, you should see a check box to the right labeled "Custom Settings", check this. Below the check box, should be a box labeled "Custom...", click this. Configure options identically to this image. (Click on image to enlarge)Once this is accomplished, you are finished configuring your graphics card. Now, to configure WoW. Configure your client like the image below, except for the refresh rate which you should more than likely keep at 60Hz. Hopefully this should help. This is exactly what I did, and it has up the smoothness of the game by a great deal.
